Rufous-collared Sparrow at Machu-Picchu.Peru Birds

A Web Page by Roy J. Beckemeyer

Last Updated 17 January 2004

A Rufous-collared Sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis)  showing off its rufous collar.  An ubiquitous and therefore generally under-appreciated colorful little sparrow found in the mountains of South and Central America from Mexico to Tierra del Fuego.  Photo by Pat Beckemeyer, 3 Nov. at Machu Picchu.

Thanks to Juan Pedro of Lima, Peru for pointing out some spelling errors on this page.  Please see his web page, "Las Aves del Olivar de San Isidro" for a bird list and great photos of some of the birds that are found in that park.  He is trying to encourage local folks to enjoy bird watching.  (And he has more pictures of the Rufous-collared Sparrow - even front views!) Thanks to Gunnar Engbloom of Lima, Peru for correcting a couple of errors on this page.  His web site is: http://www.kolibriexpeditions.com.

Hoatsin on nest.

At right is the Hoatzin, the primitive bird whose chicks have claws on the wings that allow them to climb back into the nest.  This bird was on a nest that was built out over the water of the lake near the jeep trail at Amazonia Lodge.  Photo taken 15 November by Roy Beckemeyer using a 400 mm telephoto.  This is a greatly enlarged portion of the slide (ISO 400 Fuji slide film).
