"The northernmost end of the Weddell Sea butts against the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and its adjacent islands. Ice floes jam into this corner and surround Paulet Island. The water and ice here are alive with Adelie Penguins. They are everywhere. As our ship pushes northward we encounter wave after wave of them. The sight of the ship and the sound of its throbbing engines sets them in motion. Streaming across ice bergs and funnelling into the sea, they fan out in plumes of porpoising forms. Others already in the water streak away from the ship, popping out of the water in short bursts. There are penguins on all sides as far as we can see. There are so many that it sounds like rain on the water or like bubbles bursting from a newly opened bottle of Champagne: Chateau Adelie, Vintage 1998. What a celebration of life!"
