From the 1900 Census entry shown above, we see that James W. Means and
Sarah C. Berry Means, Pat's and Shelly's Great Grandparents, had two sons, James A.
Means, their Grandfather, and Alva Means, their Grand Uncle. The family
had a boarder and a servant living with them as well. J. W. Means was a
liveryman. James W. was born in Sept. 1859 in Kentucky, and Sarah was born
in March, 1859 in Illinois. They had been married 16 years in 1900
(Marriage date 3 Dec. 1884). The 1910 census lists James as 45, and notes
that Sarah's father was born in W. Virginia and her mother in Illinois.
Archie (James A.) was 23 and Alva was 20.

Means, mayor of Carlyle, Illinois from 1897-1900. There are a series of
portraits of most of Carlyle's mayors on the wall as you enter the Carlyle City
Hall. Other relatives of ours who were mayors include H. J. C. Beckemeyer
(Roy's granduncle), and his brother, August Beckemeyer (Roy's grandfather).
