  From Pat's journal:

"What are these strange jewels, rising high above my head, extending far below my feet?
What is this color - this turquoise of sea and sky - lighted from within?
How does the light, entombed in there thousands of years ago, still shine?
Who sculpted these pieces of ice, playgrounds for penguins, recliners for seals? What shapes are these - castles, swans, domes, spires? Changing even now. Wind, rain and sea constantly at work. Jewels of the sea."
