ELMO  FOSSIL vs EXTANT INSECT Diversity:

A Web Page by Roy J. Beckemeyer
Last updated: 8 June 2000

The following pie charts show the relative distribution of species in the Elmo and the extant North American fauanas, respectively, in major groups: Apterygota; Pterygota: Palaeoptera; Pterygota: Neoptera: Exopterygota; and Pterygota: Neoptera: Endopterygota.  Note how much greater the number of species in the latter category has become in the existing insect fauna.  The Permian was a time of great diversification and evolution of the insects.
