Right and background: Female Black Swallowtail (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae:
Papilio polyxenes). At right she is laying eggs on a fennel plant
in our garden. An egg can be seen just to the left of the butterfly's
thorax, near its middle left tarsus (foot).
